eGIX LAUNCHES VELOCITY ACCESS, ACCELERATING DIAL-UP ACCESS
Software-Only Solution Delivers High-Speed Bandwidth without Cable or DSL Costs
INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA, March 11, 2002 --- eGIX, a national leader in the enhanced personal communication services industry, today launched its new Velocity Access service. The new compression technology puts the power of high-speed access into the hands of the company’s dial-up customers, accelerating the “last mile” connection. The software-only capability of Velocity Access means that customers do not need to upgrade any hardware, only download an application from the egix.com Web site. For customers with 56K dial-up access, the new service means an average of three to six times increase in speed for Web surfing, faster email downloads and improved streaming media performance.
“Though cable and DSL get lots of attention in the marketplace, there are still millions of dial-up access customers seeking faster service for a low price,” said Bob Gallup, Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing for eGIX. “Velocity Access satisfies this demand, putting big performance gains into the hands of a large number of customers – all without any hardware changes or a significant software installation.”
Currently, customers using dial-up and wireless connections must rely on the dynamic bandwidth of their service provider and the maximum speed of their hardware for fast Internet access. In fact, very few people using 56K modems actually connect at that speed. Due to hardware and connection factors such as distance from a telephone company’s switching station, line noise, line splitters and improper modem installations, most customers are more likely to connect at 40K or slower. With eGix’s new Velocity Access service, customers can overcome the common problems associated with hardware and bandwidth restrictions by taking advantage of a new technology that involves a highly effective combination of software and ISP network architecture. Customers meeting the minimum system requirements for the service, simply sign-up and download the needed client software to their PC, follow the simple onscreen installation instructions and enjoy instantly higher bandwidth.
Practical Details
The eGIX Velocity Access service is available to eGix customers immediately. The service comes with a two-week free trial, costs $27.95 per month. The service’s compression software requires a Windows 9x/NT/ME/2000/XP PC, 166 MHz or faster, with at least 48 MB RAM, Internet Explorer v 4.0 or greater and 10-20 MB of free disk space.
